This is a portrait of Samuel Delany, known to his friends as Chip. I’ve know Chip for decades. We’ve done a graphic novel together called Bread & Wine that is being reprinted this year (2013). I’ve done many drawings of him— but this was the first oil portrait. It was luxurious to slide across the geography of his face with color, noticing every curl of structure, every curl of beard as the parts melded together into his face. It is a wonderful way to look at people— you appreciate a wealth of their beauty in detail. You just love them more.
