40 X 50 Oil on linen

This painting came from nowhere. It started as a pencil/watercolor piece which I made quickly and unthinkingly, and then gave to a friend. She framed it and hung it at the end of a long hallway. One day visiting her I saw it from the other end of the hall. I had forgotten all about it, so it appeared completely new to me. I was struck by it and thought– of course it should be a large oil. So began its transition to denser renditions of grasses, the path becoming a quick stream through them and the light intensifying into the essence of heat and sun. Almost like developing a photo the old fashion way in chemical baths, the painting resolved into this strange opera with hybrid creature tumbled into the grasses and the almost-deer pair guarding, befriending, or perhaps just witnessing. It feels like summer to me.
