Faces are more difficult than trees or the sea in that only the former has vanity. I’m terribly interested in how faces are put together. I like all those wild colors that pool around the eyes, those ravines of age that criss-cross the skin. But even more challenging is to attempt to catch something of the person’s essence so that when you look at the portrait “they” hit you way before any technical information does. I fake a bit of life. Its an exercise in being other than myself .
