Demon on Canal Street

Shri Devi Magzor Gyalmo, Queen Who has the Power to Turn Back Armies on Canal Street. (Demon on Canal Street)

2006

Description

The Demon is taken from a Tibetan painting I saw at the Rubin Museum. She came home with me and after hanging around in my head for quite a while I decided she needed to go in a painting. I was thinking: Where would such a Goddess be? And then I realized that of course it would be Canal Street. So I went out in the dusk and ran back and forth across Canal Street taking pictures with the camera as high up as I could hold it. That was the easy part. Then came the problem of reducing this myriad of information into a sort of haiku while still keeping the density of the place, the overlay of a thousand light sources, the movement of everything, and the rightness of the mythological in the mundane. It came out very Bollywood which feels exactly right.
