Phosphor

2009

Description

Phosphor is about a place but also about emotion, and the quality of light in summer. The black shadows and the intense, radiant light of that season have always been a particular emotional/narrative treasure for me. The transition that happens when a creek goes from the meadow to the woods is akin to an entire novel. What the water does around stones, against banks, suddenly in the shadows of trees, and forever moving in the conversation of reflections and refractions is, for me, the language of story. The painting is about that and about the particular land where this creek did this thing in the heat of summer.
